UK weather: Will it snow in the New Year? Temperatures set to dip next week

Temperatures will drop to freezing in parts of the UK next week as forecasters warn of “winter dangers” across the UK as we head into 2026.

The weekend following Christmas Day sees warmer conditions with temperatures between 5C and 9C.

However, with the start of next week the mercury will begin to fall, reaching lows of 1 degree in Glasgow throughout the day. Temperatures will drop to 0C and below in Northern England and Scotland at night on Monday and Tuesday.

According to the statement made by Meteorology, despite the cold weather, high pressure weather cycles will calm the weather conditions until the end of the year.

Winter hazards may be possible in some places as 2026 begins as cold weather approaches the UK, but weather conditions are expected to gradually change as high pressure persists over the North Atlantic near the west and north-west. Low pressure in the east is expected to move across the North Sea, bringing a period of wet and windy weather, especially in the north.

Conditions are expected to improve further in January and colder and drier than average conditions are expected to occur. Temperatures are forecast to fall below average throughout the period; Periods of rain, showers and wind may occur.

Today:

The early morning fog will soon lift and dissipate, leaving a sunny start for a few. However, throughout the day, clouds will thicken from the north and east, bringing light rain and drizzle in higher elevations. Cool and cool.

Tonight the weather will be very cloudy, with occasional rain or drizzle. Coolness is felt especially under the clear sky in the northwest, and frost forms in places under light winds at dawn.

Sunday:

After a cold start, Sunday will be another quiet day. It’s still cloudy for the most part, with some drizzle in the hills. It’s brighter in the west, the winds are getting lighter for everyone. Cool.

From Monday to Wednesday:

High pressure continues to bring calm weather until the end of the year. Mostly cloudy skies but plenty of dry spells. While there are night frosts in places, the coolness is felt.
