UPPL Decides To Quit NDA, Announces List Of Candidates

Guwahati language : The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), an ally of the BJP-led government in Assam, has decided to quit the NDA by announcing candidates for seven out of 15 assembly constituencies in the Bodoland Territorial District of Western Assam on Tuesday.
Announcing that the party has decided to field candidates for at least 11 seats in Bodoland Territorial District, UPPL leader Raju Kumar Narzary told reporters: “Due to increasing ideological differences with the BJP, we have decided to contest the upcoming Assembly elections.
He stated: “We wanted a balance of power in the BTR as the Bodoland People’s Front is currently in the power of the Bodoland District Council. People could have approached the UPPL MLAs if their issues were not taken up by the council. But the BJP did not respond to our demands. So, we are now left with no option but to fight the elections on our own.”
The BJP had entered into an alliance with UPPL in 2021. The UPPL spokesperson also clarified that UPPL is a secular party. “We never wanted to be a part of Hindu-Muslim politics,” he asserted.
In the first list, UPPL president and Rajya Sabha member Pramod Boro was selected as the Tamulpur constituency candidate. The party has nominated general secretary Raju Kumar Narzary from Dotma (ST) constituency, while MP Lawrence Islary has been nominated from Kokrajhar (ST) seat.
Former All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) president Dipen Boro, who recently joined the UPPL, was also included in the initial list. He will contest the election from Udalguri (ST) constituency.
Significantly, UPPL leaders, including Pramod Boro, were part of the efforts that led to the signing of the new Bodoland Accord in 2020, ending four decades of insurgency in the Bodoland region of Western Assam.
Mr. Narzary stated that they wrote official letters to the BJP about their alliance, but did not receive any response from the decision, and said, “Bodoland remained completely peaceful during our tenure in BTC until September 2025. However, since BPF came to power again, the situation has become tense again and there have been many violent incidents. BTR is again witnessing illegal activities such as gambling, cattle smuggling and corruption. We will try to highlight these problems and get authority from the people during the assembly elections.” party.
