Urea consumption in Andhra Pradesh has shown a predictable upward trend for decades as farmers focus on increasing yields. The basic approach was simple: higher execution equated to better output. However, in Rabi season 2025-26, the state witnessed a marked change with urea consumption remaining largely constant despite sharp expansion in cropped area.

While total land under cultivation increased by 36%, urea availability increased by only 3%. This resulted in a significant decrease in availability per hectare from 513 kg to 338 kg; this reflects a 34% decrease. In effect, farmers were required to manage larger cultivated areas with significantly lower amounts of fertilizer, marking a shift towards more efficient use.
