US forces strike Islamic State targets in Syria

US and allied forces have launched “large-scale attacks” on Islamic State targets across Syria, the US military said.
The strikes, carried out at around 4.30am AEDT on Sunday, are part of the US response to a deadly attack on American and Syrian forces in late 2025, US Central Command (CENTCOM), which is responsible for the region, said on social media platform X.
The US military did not specify the location of the targets or provide information about possible casualties.
On December 13, two US soldiers and a US translator were killed in an attack believed to be carried out by ISIS in Palmyra.
The Pentagon said at the time that its mission was to support ongoing operations against the Islamic State and terrorism in the region. 3 more people were injured in the attack.
US President Donald Trump later vowed revenge against the terrorist group, and the military launched a major offensive against the Islamic State in Syria a week later.
“Our message remains strong: If you harm our warriors, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice,” CENTCOM said.
Approximately 1,000 US soldiers remain in Syria.
The Syrian government is led by former rebels who ousted former president Bashar al-Assad in 2024 after a 13-year civil war, and includes members of Syria’s former Al Qaeda branch, which has split from the group and clashed with the Islamic State.
Syria is cooperating with a US-led coalition against the Islamic State and reached an agreement in late 2025 when President Ahmed al-Shara visits the White House.
