The US military has issued a major update after a soldier went missing following Iran’s attack in Jordan. Authorities announced that unidentified remains were found in the area.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said military personnel made the discovery after an “extensive search” on Sunday, after announcing that two US soldiers were killed and another was missing following the July 17 attack. An investigation process to verify the remains is currently ongoing, meaning the fate of the missing soldier has yet to be officially confirmed. CENTCOM said in its latest update: “Yesterday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the deaths of two U.S. service members and one person missing in Jordan following an Iranian attack on July 17. Following an extensive search, U.S. military personnel located unidentified remains at the site earlier today. An investigation is ongoing to confirm the remains.”
Separately, CENTCOM confirmed that another US military member was killed during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance during the downing of a one-way Iranian attack drone in northern Iraq on July 18.
A second soldier was also injured and continues to receive medical treatment for what CENTCOM described as a minor injury.
CENTCOM said it was withholding further information, including the identities of missing and fallen soldiers, “out of respect for the families during the notification process.”
The latest attacks are part of a week-long campaign by Iran targeting US-allied countries in the Middle East
The deaths of two American soldiers in Jordan were announced as Tehran launched ballistic missile and drone strikes in the region, following consecutive nights of US attacks targeting Iran.
Iran also launched attacks targeting Bahrain and Jordan, while Kuwaiti armed forces said Iran’s ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles were seized.
One of the attacks targeted Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, also known as Azraq, a joint facility of the Royal Jordanian Air Force and the US Air Force in Jordan’s Zarqa Governorate.
The base hosted US F-15, F-22 and F-35 fighter jets as well as MQ-9 Reaper drones, making it a major hub for American air power in the region.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had previously responded to the death of two American soldiers in Jordan in a social media post: “For God’s sake, heroes. Their sacrifice only strengthens our resolve.”
