US President, Xi Jinping continue US-China summit with discussions on Iran, trade and Taiwan
Beijing: US President Donald Trump, who was greeted with military pageantry and pageantry on the red carpet in Beijing last night, showered effusive praise on his Chinese counterpart and “great leader” Xi Jinping, who used the first talks of the two-day summit to send a warning about Taiwan.
Highly sensitive to the outlook of this risky visit, the world’s two most powerful men presented an image of friendly relations but contrasting messages before closing the doors of the Great Hall of the People to discuss the deep tensions underpinning the US-China relationship.
Xi, who was more measured than his American rival, said the two countries would benefit from cooperation and should be “partners, not rivals” and in his short speech open to the media, he said “when we meet, both sides will suffer.”
But behind closed doors, he issued a warning to Trump about Taiwan, which he described as the “most important issue” shaping the future of Sino-US relations.
