Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado wins Nobel peace prize | Nobel peace prize

Venezuelan opposition politician María Corina Machado won the Nobel peace prize.

The committee praised Machado as a “courageous and determined defender of peace” who “kept the flame of democracy alive during the growing darkness.”

Norwegian Nobel Committee leader Jørgen Watne Frydnes made the announcement at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.

This year’s awards committee was under particular scrutiny following Donald Trump’s intense public and private campaign. The US president was openly jealous of four of his predecessors, including Barack Obama. accepted prize.

Trump’s outbursts raised concerns in Norway that the 79-year-old Trump risks reprisals if he does not receive what is generally considered the world’s most prestigious award.

Last year, Nihon Hidankyo, the movement that survived the Japanese atomic bomb, was awarded the award. This year, the committee was able to choose from a total of 338 candidates, 244 of which were individuals and 94 organizations.

Other past winners include Nelson Mandela, the late Chinese rights activist Liu Xiaobo, and campaigners and organizations such as the EU and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
