Holocaust victim Anne Frank reimagined as a pansexual Latina with non-binary lover and neurodiverse family in controversial NYC musical

A new musical in New York City has sparked fierce reactions to its reimagining of Holocaust victim Anne Frank as a pansexual Latina hiding from the Nazi occupation with her neurodiverse family and a nonbinary love interest.
Slam Frank is a satirical play that exaggerates current cultural trends around inclusivity and identity politics, applying them to one of history’s most tragic stories, critiquing how performance-based ‘wokeness’ can distort storytelling.
The show began as a viral Instagram parody of Jewish composer Andrew Fox, who joked about creating a production that would make ‘Latinx girls feel included in the Holocaust.’
The video revealed an entire production built around the conceit of a play within a play: a fictional theater troupe attempting to ‘decolonise’ the story of Anne Frank.
The humor moves towards absurdity from this point on, as characters explore new marginalized identities in musical numbers, swap yellow stars for pronoun pins, and even communicate with ancestors lost in border crossings.
The production’s musical numbers, which many outlets have compared to a Hamilton-style spoof, feature characters exploring new marginal identities and dramatically swapping their yellow stars for rainbow-colored pronoun pins.
Despite its controversial premise, the production was greatly appreciated by the audience.
With a promotional budget of less than $60, he sold out most of his 34 shows, causing crowds to view it as either a daring satire or highly offensive.
Supporters liken it to the Book of Mormon for its tendency to provoke; Critics argue that it trivializes one of history’s darkest chapters.
A new musical in New York City called Slam Frank has sparked fierce reactions to its reimagining of Holocaust victim Anne Frank as a pansexual Latina in hiding with her neurodiverse family and a nonbinary love interest.
Despite its controversial premise, the production received great appreciation from the audience.
The petition launched by Joy Rosenthal called for the immediate cancellation of the play, accusing Slam Frank of trivializing the death of Anne Frank, “one of the most sacred testimonies of the persecution of the Jewish people.”
In fact, a petition started by Joy Rosenthal called for the immediate cancellation of the play, accusing Slam Frank of trivializing the death of Anne Frank, ‘one of the most sacred testimonies to the oppression of the Jewish people’.
The petition reads: ‘Turning his story into a ‘slam’ or any form of entertainment that prioritizes shock value over historical respect is not only inappropriate but also deeply offensive.
‘The Jewish community, Holocaust survivors, and educators around the world have worked tirelessly to preserve the dignity and lessons of this history.
‘Slam Frank undermines these efforts by reducing a profound tragedy to spectacle, risking misinformation, desensitization and ridicule of the real suffering endured by millions.
‘Art and theater must have a certain standard of responsibility, especially when dealing with issues that involve such serious human suffering.
‘There are ways to tell difficult stories creatively and thoughtfully; but this production fails to honor the memory of Anne Frank and all the victims of the Holocaust.’
But Andrew Fox isn’t bothered.
Speaking to the Daily Mail about the petition, he said: ’Aside from the devastating impact this tidal wave of criticism has had on my mental health (I have RSD – Rejection Sensitivity Disorder), the petitions and outcry have been extremely bad for our sales.
‘When our shows started selling out weeks in advance, we hoped we could turn away dozens of hopefuls in our reserve ticket queue – but now, due to negative press, we can only turn away half a dozen people.
‘We ask for some privacy so we can grieve with our chosen family. We hope the haters are happy with themselves.
Slam Frank sold out most of his performances at the 150-seat AsylumNYC.
The application, which started on September 17, is planned to end on October 26.
