Virat Kohli on cusp of history, needs 54 runs to overtake Kumar Sangakkara in elite ODI list

Virat Kohli is preparing to return to the international jack during the ODI series against Australia. The former captain of India is currently only participating in ODI matches. After the 2024 World Cup, he moved away from T20 International. In May 2025, he retired from the test jack. Virat, which plays an important role in the victory of India in the 2025 Champions Cup, is now focusing on joining the 2027 ODI World Cup. He and Rohit will make their highly anticipated returns to Australia.

Virat, which has many ODI records, approaches an important success. To become the highest scorer in ODI history, Kumar ran only 54 from crossing Sangakkara.

After making ODI output in 2008, Virat accumulated 14,181 runs during the 302 ODI. In the ranking of all time, he only follows Sachin Tendulkar and Sangakkara. Tendulkar, who played 463 ODI, finished his career with 18,426 running.

Sangakkara collected 14,234 runs in 404 ODI. Virat has the opportunity to overcome the legend of Sri Lanka in ODI against Australia. However, overtaking Tendulkar seems to be a scary challenge for virate, and it seems likely that the ODIs will finish the ODI as the second highest scorer.

India’s Australian tour will consist of 3 ODI and 5 T20I. The opening ODI is scheduled to take place on October 19 at Perth Stadium in Perth. The second ODI will take place on October 23 in Adelaide.

Five T20I, 29, 31, 2, 6 and 8 November will be played in Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Gold Coast and Brisbane, respectively.

Following the series against Australia, Virat and Rohit will meet South Africa in three ODI at home. These matches are at Ranchi, Raipur and Vizag on 30 November and 6 November and November 6, respectively.
