Want to volunteer at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games? Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announces ‘passport’ plan
A system that will reward Brisbane residents who already contribute to society and want to volunteer at the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games has been announced by the mayor.
Under the “volunteer passport” system, existing volunteers will build “credits” that are recognized when the highly competitive application process opens.
Nearly 300,000 people applied for just 45,000 places at the 2024 Paris Games.
“Effectively, people who are already volunteering are developing stamps in their passports — or volunteer credits — that make them ready to volunteer in 2032, because we want the absolute best,” Adrian Schrinner told a crowd of industry leaders on Thursday.
“Where are you [the best volunteers] to create? Today they are found in social organizations. They are found in sports clubs. They’ve been there… flipping sausages on the barbecue. They help raise money and are the glue that holds it all together.
“The volunteer program will be absolutely critical.”
The “volunteer passport” was mentioned in the Brisbane Beyond the Games legacy plan announced by the Brisbane City Council.
No timeline has been announced for when it will be released.
Nearly 60,000 volunteers are being sought for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
