Congress considering helping Vijay form a ‘secular’ government in Tamil Nadu after appealing for support
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, reached out to the Congress, a constituent of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, seeking support to form the government in Tamil Nadu; The debutant party emerged as the largest single party in the Parliament, winning 108 seats and falling short of a simple majority in the 234-member House.
The national party, which won five seats, signaled that it could increase its support. In New Delhi, All India Congress Committee general secretary KC Venugopal confirmed that TVK had formally sought support from the Congress.
According to TVK sources, Vijay and senior leaders of the party sought an appointment to meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
As the leader of the largest party, Vijay is likely to either make the claim or seek more time to form the government. It remains to be seen whether Vijay will seek support from other allies of the DMK or AIADMK to prove his majority.
