Weather map: Where in UK will be as hot as Athens on Friday as temperatures set to soar

Temperatures look set to rise across the UK this week, with some areas expected to be as hot as Athens.

Spring sunshine is expected across much of the UK, with above average temperatures due to high pressure before the weekend, according to the Met Office.

On Thursday, temperatures rose as high as 19°C in some parts of the country, as sunny weather increased temperatures, especially in the southeast.

Forecasters are predicting strong sunshine and high temperatures of 20C in parts of England on Friday, according to the Met Office; Southeastern areas are expected to hover around 18C, with the northwest expected to climb even higher. It will match the high temperatures in the Greek capital Athens, where the mercury is also expected to rise to 20°C.

The Met Office said conditions were likely to remain breezy in the south-west, but elsewhere lighter winds would allow temperatures to rise.

Steven Keates, the agency’s vice president of forecasting, said a period of high pressure throughout the weekend meant conditions were expected to remain mostly sunny and dry.

“As is most of the time, there are some exceptions, with cloudier conditions at times and a chance of scattered rain for northern Scotland later in the weekend, so keep an eye on the forecast as the week progresses,” Mr Keates added.

Temperatures are expected to rise steadily during sunny weather, he said, with temperatures likely to top out in the low twenties.

However, he added that land breezes in coastal areas will bring cooler temperatures.

Tourism Alliance Executive Director Eddy Leviten said: “This is the time when the UK shows what it does best. Few destinations can match the diversity on offer, with coast, countryside, heritage, activities, attractions, culture and cities all within easy reach.

“For our members, this is an open window to grow bookings, support jobs and deliver real value to the UK economy. The visitor economy is one of our largest economic sectors, worth £147bn.”
