Most of the exit polls for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections released on Wednesday showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gaining a slight edge over the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). After the Bengal exit polls were announced, Bangladesh MP Akhtar Hussain said that if the BJP forms a government in the state, it will lead to a refugee crisis in Dhaka.

In a video circulating on social media, the Bangladeshi MP is heard saying that the exit polls showing the victory of the BJP in West Bengal are a big concern for Bangladesh. He says if the BJP wins, illegal Bangladeshis will be thrown back into Bangladesh and this will create a crisis for them.

Bengal exit polls predict anxiety in Dhaka

Speaking in Parliament, National Citizen Party General Secretary Akhtar Hussain said the West Bengal exit poll forecast has become a cause for concern in Dhaka. He warned that if the BJP forms the government in West Bengal, it could push allegedly undocumented migrants back to Bangladesh, potentially triggering a refugee crisis.

“If the exit polls in West Bengal show the victory of the BJP and the party forms the government, they will push all the ‘Kanglu’ people to Bangladesh. This will create a huge humanitarian, economic and refugee crisis for us. We are worried about this,” he said in the video. he said.


The issue of illegal immigration has been a major bone of contention in the West Bengal elections and BJP leaders have frequently raised the issue. These remarks came amid recent tensions, including Dhaka expressing displeasure over Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s comments on Bangladeshi migrants.

West Bengal Elections 2026: Exit Polls

Polls point to a neck-and-neck contest between the two main rivals, with the BJP and TMC estimated to have around 145 seats each in the 294-member Assembly, while the others are likely to secure around four seats. The exit poll by Chanakya Strategies predicts 150-160 Assembly seats in the BJP’s corner, while Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) will have 130-140 seats. According to People’s Pulse, TMC may emerge ahead with 177-187 seats, while BJP is expected to emerge with 95-110 seats.

According to Matrize’s exit poll predictions, the BJP will win the West Bengal Assembly polls 146-161, while the TMC is expected to win 125 to 140 seats.
