West Bengal govt allocates 1,000 km of land to set up border fence of about 172 km along international border

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said that the West Bengal government has allocated more than 1,000 acres of land for erection of border fencing covering 172 km of border with Bangladesh.

“Ensuring national security and strengthening our borders is the top priority of our government. As part of our commitment to secure the India-Bangladesh Border, we have expedited the process of land transfer to the Border Security Force (BSF) for the construction of basic fencing,” the Prime Minister said on social media.

Mr. Adhikari added that as of July 14, 2026, “a total of 1,024.75 acres of land stretching along 172.6 km (international border) has been officially transferred for this purpose.”

District-wise details of the land allocated and the length of the boundary fence show that around 337 acres were probably allocated in Murshidabad, where the fences were erected at 45.4 km, followed by North 24 Parganas, where the land allocated was 241.03 acres and probably the fence to be erected was 42.07 km.

Border fencing will be erected for approximately 39.39 km in North Bengal’s Cooch Behar district and the land allocated for this purpose is 135.33 acres. Similarly, in Malda, another district located in northern Bengal, approximately 176.78 acres of land has been allocated and 20.15 km of fencing will be erected.

The land has been allocated for setting up border fencing in nine border districts in the state and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said that his government will remain firm in our resolve to complete these projects to provide a safer and more secure environment to our citizens.

When the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in West Bengal, it promised to build fences along areas not surrounded by Bangladesh. The Suvendu Adhikari government purchases land directly from farmers and transfers it to BSF. Over the past two months, the Prime Minister has described the transfer of land to BSF for erection of border fencing as an achievement of his government. West Bengal shares a 2,216 km border with Bangladesh and before the BJP government came to power, around 550 km of the border was unfenced.
