White House let slip they want one nation to win World Cup more than rivals | Football | Sport

Britain has a new supporter in the White House, with Donald Trump adviser Andrew Giuliani hoping for a Three Lions victory next weekend. Thomas Tuchel’s team must first beat Argentina to qualify for the final, but the 2026 FIFA World Cup executive director of the White House Task Force wants them to go all the way.

With the United States already withdrawing from the tournament, a White House official was drawn to the story that England was coming to America to claim victory on the 250th anniversary of US independence. The 40-year-old believes in England’s chances despite failing to find success on the global stage since 1966.

Argentina and then either Spain or France still stand in the way of World Cup glory for Thomas Tuchel’s squad. Giuliani is confident that Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham can lead the team to success.

“You know, if the United States doesn’t win on our 250th birthday, then it would be a great story for the British to come to America and win at our anniversary celebration,” Giuliani told the Daily Mail.

“‘I think it’s been 60 years of pain for England, so if they win the tournament it would be a nice victory for them. I definitely think England can go all the way, they’re one of the best teams left at the moment.’

“Harry Kane is the England team’s number one goalscorer and if they are to win the tournament he will be the main reason,” he continued. “He is one of the main players on the team and he and Jude Bellingham are good athletes.

“England seem to me to be a very balanced team, you have to have confidence and what the coach has to look into them for is that they have the potential to win.”

England captain Kane is a particular favorite of US President Trump, who is scheduled to attend the trophy presentation on Sunday. Trump has previously described the former Tottenham striker as a “great player” and “great man” on social media.

The England captain enjoyed playing golf with Trump in 2024 after receiving an invitation during his time in Palm Beach, Florida. “I played well, to be honest, but he invited me to play when he was in Palm Beach 18 months ago,” Kane said.

“So, when the president invited you somewhere, it was a pretty surreal experience to meet him and, of course, play golf with him.”

Kane continued: “To be honest, his golf is pretty good. I hope I can play golf as well as him when I get to his age, that’s for sure. It’s a unique experience, but I’m grateful he invited me to play.”
