Why Prince George wore a suit and tie at Wimbledon despite 29C heat | Royal | News

Prince George looked dapper as he attended Wimbledon with his mum, dad and younger sister today. The young Prince, the eldest of William and Kate’s children, sat in the Royal Box with his family to watch Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev meet in the men’s singles final on Sunday, July 12.

The 12-year-old future king looked dapper in a dark navy blue suit, crisp, bright shirt and striped tie. The outfit was what we’d expect from a royal who was still a child. But some were surprised to see stylish, layered outfits being worn in such hot London weather.

The UK is in the midst of a new heatwave, with temperatures in Wimbledon, south-west London, reaching 29°C today. High temperatures were experienced throughout the tournament as England grappled with a record-breaking hot summer. But that didn’t stop the Royal family from dressing as expected.

But it’s not necessarily Prince George’s status as a Royal or heir to the throne that determines his wardrobe choices today.

Prince George is supposed to dress like the other men in the Royal Lodge. Invitations for this lounge area come directly from the president of the All England Club and come with clear instructions on how to dress.

The Wimbledon website says: “Protocol – dress is smart, suit/jacket and tie etc. Ladies are asked not to wear hats as they tend to obstruct the view of those sitting behind them.”

But the rules don’t always seem so rigidly set. In fact, Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s attendance is a slight infraction, as children are not usually allowed into the Royal Lodge.

Hats, meanwhile, are generally not allowed, but these rules have been relaxed in recent years as temperatures have risen at Wimbledon.
