Will Rogers State Beach suspect on felony warrant caught by LA lifeguards

A man wanted for a felony tried to skirt the law Thursday and spent nearly 90 minutes in the Pacific Ocean before being surrounded by lifeguards, ending his bizarre escape attempt.

Accordingly KTLAThe unusual standoff began around 7:21 a.m. after officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) West LA Division attempted to make contact with the suspect near Pacific Coast Highway and Sunset Boulevard.

The man allegedly fled on foot before running past the lifeguard tower and into the water at Will Rogers State Beach.

In the video, the man is seen continuing to resist as he is brought alongside the ship; police and lifeguards pulled him aboard and detained him.

KTLA reported that while the sheriff’s department boat and the county lifeguard rescue boat were positioned offshore, the suspect remained hundreds of feet offshore as lifeguards from the rescue boards remained nearby, monitoring his condition and trying to talk to him.

According to media reports, the suspect at one point swam towards shore near Temescal Canyon before suddenly turning into deeper water, prompting lifeguards to take action and end the confrontation.

FOX 11 reported that the suspect swam about a mile during the nearly 90-minute ordeal and appeared to be naked from the waist down.
