Wisconsin sheriff explains why he’s suing for $1M after woman allegedly faked ICE detention at a hotel

A. sheriff of wisconsin He is fighting against what he calls a “bizarre” story, filing a lawsuit against a woman who claimed she was being illegally held in prison but was actually staying in a hotel.

Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt announced a civil lawsuit will be filed against the woman involved and a local politician who he said helped spread the story. Schmidt is seeking $1 million in damages, but says he is doing so out of “responsibility.”

“They went after the wrong sheriff,” Schmidt said Thursday “The Will Cain Show.”

“When I find evidence to prove that you lied about my agency, especially when you called my corrections officers liars, you better believe it: I will come after you,” he added.

Dodge County Sheriff’s Office says Sundas “Sunny” Naqvi lied about being held by federal authorities for nearly two days. While Naqvi claims he was taken across the state line to the Dodge County jail, federal authorities say he was briefly pulled over. Chicago O’Hare International Airport less than 90 minutes before being released.

“He was out getting a spa treatment. He was getting DoorDash. He was doing everything except being in the custody of DHS or the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt’s office said records and surveillance video showed Naqvi checking into the Hampton Inn while he claimed to be in custody. Evidence allegedly shows that he made multiple transactions at the hotel during his alleged incarceration.

“Can you imagine having an organization that does things the right way and someone comes in and lies through their teeth about being at your facility?” said Schmidt. “My only recourse is to achieve some form of accountability through civil litigation.”

In addition to Naqvi, Schmidt is also suing Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison, who he says held a news conference about the alleged incident. Schmidt also suggested others could be added to the case, including potential media outlets.
