Woman in her 20s is arrested after police chase of suspected stolen car ended in three-vehicle pile-up that put 12 in hospital

A woman in her 20s was arrested after a police chase into a suspected stolen car resulted in a three-car pile-up that sent 12 people to hospital.

Patrol officers tracked down the vehicle, which they believed to be stolen, in Redbridge, north-east London, at around 12.30pm on Saturday.

The car failed to stop and collided with another car Junction of High Road and Barsley Lane.

The Met Police confirmed nine people were injured in the incident, which was attended by police as well as the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance.

They include the driver of the suspected stolen vehicle, four other passengers, the driver of the second car, two other passengers in that vehicle and a moped driver.

Police said six people were taken to hospital for further evaluation, while five people, aged between 14 and 46, remained hospitalized with serious injuries.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 20s, remains in hospital. Following the collision, he was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft and failure to stop.

Four other passengers in the stolen vehicle – a woman in her 40s, a teenage girl and two men in their 20s – were also arrested on suspicion of being in the stolen vehicle. All four remain in hospital.

The crash caused major disruption across Goodmayes and the public were urged to avoid the area while a cordon was put in place between Goodmayes Road and Eccleston Crescent.

While police teams started an investigation and emergency teams worked at the scene, the highway was closed in both directions in the morning.

Bus routes 86 and N86 were also affected, with rerouting via Green Lanes, Whalebone Lane South and London Road.

The Metropolitan Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the pursuit and subsequent collision.

Police are expected to review CCTV, dashcam footage and witness accounts as part of the investigation.

A spokesman for the force said: ‘Officers were on patrol at around 00:30 on Saturday, May 16 when they attempted to stop a vehicle they believed had been stolen. When the vehicle did not stop, a short chase ensued.

‘The vehicle was then involved in a collision with another car at the junction of High Road, Redbridge and Barley Lane. Nine people were reported injured, including the driver of the suspected stolen vehicle, four passengers, the driver of the second car, two passengers in that vehicle and a moped driver.

‘Officers were supported by the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance. Six people were taken to hospital for evaluation. Five people, aged between 14 and 46, remain in hospital with serious injuries.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to reports of a ‘road traffic accident’ at the junction of Barley Lane and Goodmayes Road in Ilford at 12.34pm on Saturday.

In a statement they said: ‘We deployed a range of resources including ambulance crews, an incident response officer, our joint response unit, an advanced paramedic, members of our Hazardous Areas Response Team (HART) and the London air ambulance.

‘We treated ten patients at the scene and took nine to hospital. One person refused further assistance.’
