Won’t allow Gujarat to snatch Karnataka’s IPL events again, says Shivakumar

Bengaluru: Chief minister-designate DK Shivakumar on Monday said the government will take necessary steps to see that Gujarat does not snatch the IPL cricket events from Karnataka again.

His comments came amid celebrations over RCB’s victory over Bengaluru and the rest of Karnataka in the Tata IPL 2026 finals played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) last month chose Ahmedabad as the new venue to host the high-profile finals and withdrew the event from Bengaluru amid recent controversy over demand for tickets for MLAs and MPs.

In his chat with the media, Shivakumar said that the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) should host the IPL finals and the state government has also allowed it. But Gujarat used its influence and alienated him from Karnataka. “It may have disappointed our cricket fans. We are taking necessary steps to see that this does not happen again. But it will take some time,” said Shivakumar, who is scheduled to be sworn in as CM on Wednesday.

The demands of the Karnataka government that MLAs, MLCs and MPs be given at least three tickets were suspected to be the trigger for the BCCI’s decision to divert the event to Gujarat.
