The ₹1.50 crore project of Kerala Road Safety Authority (KRSA) to redevelop Vyttila Junction and decongest was launched on Sunday (June 21).

Although Vyttila is the largest junction in Kerala, the junction and the roads converging there remained bottlenecked despite the launch of a six-lane flyover in 2021. Several projects announced by the then State government, including one to reduce the size of the massive medians and the roundabout under the flyover, were not implemented.

“As traffic congestion was worsening day by day, I met the then Transport Minister KB Ganesh Kumar, who sought funds to redevelop the junction and remove bottlenecks. MP Hibi Eden then also paid a field visit and it was decided to implement a project prepared by the City Traffic police. Thus, the funds were provided from KRSA,” Uma Thomas, MLA from Vyttila’s constituency, said in a press release.

He added that despite the delay in starting works, the contractor agreed to complete the redevelopment of the junction within a limited time. Among the works that started on Sunday is the reduction of a significant section of the medians under the overpass that prevents smooth traffic flow.

Apart from Ms. Thomas, those present at the inauguration of the redevelopment project included Mayor VK Minimol, ACP, Edappally Traffic Police, Sheriff S., NHAI officials, councillors, traders and public.
