World Cup 2026: Gavi does not think Paredes should be suspended

Spanish midfielder Gavi does not believe Argentine Leandro Paredes should be suspended for his role in the post-World Cup final clash.

While celebrating Spain’s 1-0 win, Argentine players Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were involved in a fight on the field.

Paredes appeared to choke Spaniard Eric Garcia and unused substitute Gavi tried to intervene but was tackled to the ground by Almada.

Paredes pushed the Barcelona midfielder towards the pitch, placing his hand on the Spaniard’s face.

Fifa has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess what happened and any player or coach involved could be suspended, while the Argentine Football Association could also be fined.

“I don’t think so [Paredes] must be stopped” Gavi told El Partidazo de COPE., external

“I know it’s not a good image for kids, but I think there’s also a more physical, more aggressive side to football.

“The most logical thing would be to send him off during the match, that’s all. After all, I think everything is football and that’s the way it should be.”
