‘You are joking me’: Alleged Perth car jacking commedically backfires, ending in wild citizen’s arrest

A Perth local’s run to the liquor store resulted in a dramatic citizen’s arrest after he witnessed an embarrassing carjacking attempt.

Adam Breen was at the cash register of Dan Murphy’s in Carine about to buy drinks for his birthday party when he watched a “sketchy”-looking person, allegedly carrying stolen drinks, rush out of the stores.

“Is it that easy?” Breen said to another customer in line.

As staff and customers watched the hi-vis-clad man run from the store towards the car park, another person in the store said: “That’s the man in the (allegedly) stolen car.”

Impressed by this absurd situation, Breen decided that the drinks could wait a little longer because he wanted to record the alleged thief.

“I walked outside and clearly saw him jump in the car, there was no license plate, no anything and I said ‘it’s classic’,” Breen told PerthNow.

Breen, who recorded the escape attempt, watched hysterically as the man tried to accelerate with the handbrake on.

“You’re kidding… You’re getting angry,” he said in the viral recording.

The battered Mazda’s attempt at a quick escape was short-lived.

We hit the main road before the driver got out of the car to investigate why the rear wheels were not cooperating.

“He jumped out and yelled that this car sucks and stuff,” Breen said.

“That’s when I said, ‘I’m guessing the handbrake might be on,’ and he had this kind of breakthrough moment and I thought, ‘f… maybe I shouldn’t have said that’.”

Despite the light bulb being exposed, the alleged car thief decided to abandon the Mazda and try his luck at allegedly getting his hands on a new car.

That’s when Breen decided enough was enough.

“He was trying to do it and I said, ‘You can’t pass me.'”

The dramatic chase ended with the heroic takedown of the Carine man, who restrained him until police arrived.

The alleged thief failed to headbutt Breen and leave him with a black eye for his efforts.

“The most important thing was himself, he got his pants dirty,” he said.

“I was very glad to see the police approaching, because I was afraid he might inject some of the pressure I was putting on him into his trousers.

“He said, ‘oh, look at your eyes,’ and I said, ‘dude, check your pants.’”

Breen managed to arrive at his party without any drama, despite the alleged thief holding a knife to her, but she was met with some suspicious glares.

Footage of Breen’s escape was later uploaded to social media and went viral; locals praised his brave efforts.

“Someone buy this guy some beers for me please,” one comment read.

“I’m doing God’s work. The streets are safer because of you kid,” another wrote.

The official Solo Australia account even chimed in, saying, “Our hero.”
