Zohran Mamdani hit with outrage from World Cup fans as socialist mayor watches Brazil vs Morocco from luxury suite ‘for FREE’ at MetLife Stadium

Mayor Zohran Mamdani risked the wrath of New Yorkers on Saturday when he was spotted watching World Cup action at MetLife for supposedly free of charge.
The mayor, who organized the World Cup ticket giveaway for New Yorkers, attended Brazil’s opening match against Morocco in a highly anticipated Group C thriller at MetLife Stadium.
Mamdani was joined by New York Governor Kathy Hochul at the match, which was co-hosted by New York and New Jersey as one of the 11 American cities hosting the World Cup, which started on Thursday in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
But the mayor’s attendance at the game sparked outrage in the Big Apple when it emerged he had managed to get his ticket for free.
Despite tickets to the football extravaganza costing fans thousands of dollars, the first-rate mayor reportedly did not pay a penny.
He is said to have snatched up a number of special tickets to games throughout the tournament, which would normally cost an eye-watering amount.

The mayor’s office confirmed the report in a statement to the Daily Mail.
‘Given the unique nature of the World Cup and the once-in-a-generation opportunity for New York City to serve as the host city, the mayor will attend select matches. [MetLife Stadium] “This is in his official capacity to perform official duties as the general manager of the host city,” Mamdani spokeswoman Dora Pekec said.
Pekec reportedly said Mamdani had a ‘contractual obligation with the New York/New Jersey 2026 World Cup Host Committee’ to attend the matches.
The rights package provides host organizations with tickets that allow them to carry out their duties, including representing the city and interacting with fans before visiting heads of state and dignitaries.
He emphasized that the tickets were purchased for bargaining and provided in accordance with the contract, meaning they were not gifts. The mayor’s clerk sought counsel from the Conflicts of Interest Board, which approved the tickets.
However, it is said that Mamdani’s wife Rama Duwaji, who attended the match with her husband, paid for her own ticket.
As of game day, the cheapest tickets for the blockbuster matchup were listed on resale sites for up to $1,600.
Mamdani’s free pass sparked outrage among New Yorkers, who told the Socialist Democrat to skip the astronomical prices.
“Because of socialism, we should have given the nice seats to some poor people who couldn’t afford them,” wrote one social media user.
‘A socialist watching millionaires parade around in the most capitalist sports tournament. ‘Poetic irony,’ added another.

Meanwhile, a third asked: ‘But I’m sure he’ll give them away to people less fortunate than himself. Right?’
The mayor also came under criticism earlier this week when he revealed how much he paid for tickets to the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs.
On Monday, Mamdani told reporters in Central Park that he paid for his own ticket to the game and only paid $1,000 for his seat.
But not every New Yorker was convinced; some were wondering if the mayoral discount applied.
‘I bought my tickets from Madison Square Garden for about $1,000,’ he said. ‘I’m going to the 3rd game tonight and I’ll be up throughout the game.’
He insisted he bought his ticket ‘directly from the organization itself’, but as of Monday afternoon tickets for the same section were being sold on resale sites for $4,900.
However, Mamdani is a regular at nosebleeds at MSG and has been seen at Knicks games in a similar section before.
