Zohran Mamdani’s Socialist Vows: Inside The NYC Mayor-Elect’s Lavish Dubai Wedding With Burj Khalifa Views | VIDEO | World News

Weeks before Zohran Mamdani was projected to become the first Muslim and youngest New York Mayor in more than a century, the Democratic Socialist held a lavish engagement and nikah (Islamic wedding ceremony) in Dubai, sparking debate about the optics of luxury for a politician running on a platform of combating wealth inequality.
The 34-year-old elected mayor of Indian origin met his wife, 28-year-old Syrian American artist Rama Duwaji, on the dating app Hinge in 2021. The couple celebrated their union privately on many continents, reflecting their different backgrounds.
Garden Romance with Horizon Views
Following their engagement in October 2024, the event in Dubai was held on the spectacular rooftop of Vida Creek Harbour.
space: The venue provided an iconic backdrop with a direct view of the Burj Khalifa.
Aesthetic: Florists transformed the rooftop into a “blooming garden” with soft ivory roses, lisianths and fresh greenery. The design firm described the atmosphere as “urban garden romance filled with lush blooms, embracing the couple in the quiet luxury of nature.”
Outfit details: For the marriage ceremony, Duwaji wore a white dress with silver tones, while Mamdani wore a navy blue kurta.
Celebrating Dubai is important to Duwaji as he spent most of his childhood there and his family still lives in the city.
Three-Part Wedding Journey
Mamdani’s wedding celebrations were a multi-event affair that spanned months across continents, reflecting her family’s roots and the couple’s modern life:
Dubai, December 2024: Official wedding and engagement party.
New York (February 2025): A simple civil ceremony was held at the City Clerk’s office in Lower Manhattan, formalizing their union.
Uganda, July 2025: A three-day celebration was held at Mamdani’s family’s mansion in Uganda, where her distinguished academic father, Mahmood Mamdani, resides. Mamdani is the son of well-known Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and a Ugandan academic of Indian origin.
Duwaji, who will be the city’s first Gen Z first lady, has kept a noticeably low profile throughout her husband’s high-profile campaign, preferring to advise him privately rather than step into the political spotlight.
