10.64% of Mumbai Voters have Duplicate Entries: SEC Data

mumbai: About 10.64 per cent or more than 11 lakh of Mumbai’s 1.03 crore voters have duplicate entries in the electoral roll, according to data shared by the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC). The data shows that the majority of wards with the highest number of repeat voters were previously represented by Opposition companies.
The SEC on Wednesday extended the deadline for filing objections from Nov. 27 to Dec. 3. According to the statement made by the SEC, the final voter list will be published on December 10.
Data shows that 4.33 lakh voters appeared in the draft voters list published last week more than once, with multiple entries ranging from two to 103 times. Thus, the total number of duplicate registrations increased to 11,01,505.
The SEC attributed the duplication of names to factors such as printing errors, voter relocation and failure to remove the names of deceased people. Booth-level employees will now conduct site visits, fill out forms and obtain verification commitments to ensure each voter is listed only once, officials said.
The local body elections in Mumbai, which are scheduled to be completed by January 31, 2026 as per the Supreme Court directive, may face a slight delay, an SEC official said.
He added that depending on the pace of corrections by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the elections may be held by the end of January or the SEC may ask for an extension until the first week of February.
SEC data also shows that four of the five districts with the highest number of repeat voters were previously represented by opposition corporators belonging to parties such as Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (SP). Two of these wards fall under the Worli assembly constituency represented by Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray.
Opposition leaders alleged irregularities in the ongoing revision of the voters’ list.
In a post on X, Aaditya Thackeray claimed there were “millions” of duplicate names, fake household entries and voter cards lacking basic details.
He warned that not extending the proposal and objection period would create doubts about the fairness of the election process.
Worli’s ward no. 199, previously represented by former mayor and Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar, has the highest number of repeat voters at 8,207. This is followed by Ghatkopar’s ward no. According to SEC data, Parel-Lalbaug’s ward is 131st with 7,741 repeat voters, Parel-Lalbaug’s ward is 203rd with 7,624, Kalachowki’s ward is 205th with 7,585 and Century Mill’s ward is 194th with 7,584 repeat voters.
Meanwhile, civil officials said that an effort to delete duplicate names is currently ongoing.
A senior BMC official clarified that the 11 lakh figure refers to the number of repeated entries and not individual persons, adding that the civic body is conducting door-to-door checks to clear registration lists.
All 25 deputy municipal commissioners have been appointed as principal officers for the remedial exercise, which will run from November 27 to December 5. The final voter list is expected to be published after this.
