One of the busiest airports in Spain is about to get a huge upgrade thanks to its € 1.5 billion (£ 1.3 billion) expansion plan. After the upgrades are completed, passengers traveling from Malaga Airport, a gateway for holidaymakers in Costa del Sol and Andalusia, will no longer need to remove fluids or laptops from their bags.
The project, which is approved within the scope of the Government’s Dora III program, will introduce the latest technology security browsers designed to accelerate controls and improve passenger comfort. Passport control areas will be expanded to both space and capacity to effectively process with more travelers. Malaga Airport, Madrid and Barcelona last year after a record-breaking 24.9 million passengers and about six million check-in bags in Spain’s most intense airport-2023 compared to an increase of 11.5%.
The Great Investment is a part of a wider modernization plan that would spend € 12.8 billion (£ 11.2 billion) between 2027 and 2031 in Spain’s 49 airports and two heliport networks by Aena, the Spanish airport operator.
Malaga aims to increase the capacity of upgrades to more than 36 million passengers per year and to be one of Europe’s most modern airports.
Airport Director Pedro Bendala confirmed that construction works are expected to start at the end of 2028 and the expansion was divided into various stages to ensure that the airport works during the upgrades.
The first stage will focus on increasing the area in the terminal buildings and developing systems including check-in, luggage demand and boarding doors. Subsequent stages include the demolition and replacement of a new boarding scaffold and old boarding areas for non -Schengen flights.
By 2034, the surface area of the airport will grow to more than 860,000 square meters to 1.5 million square meters – almost doubled.
The project will also invest in sustainability measures such as reducing carbon emissions and water consumption and increasing accessibility for all passengers.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, while presenting the plan in Alicante this week, described the expansion as ı the biggest investment in airports for decades ”.
This news comes as another airport because it is open next year, it will be one of the largest airport in its country and one of the largest airports in the world.
After years of construction, Vietnam’s Long Thanh International Airport aims to open its doors in 2026. The new building is located in Long Thanh in a land of 5,000 hectares and finally aims to meet about 100 million passengers a year.
This makes it equal with large airports in Dubai and Dallas. The airport will have three terminals and four runways at a total cost of 336 trillion (£ 9.5 billion).
