At least 60 people killed in drone strike in besieged Sudan city

At least 60 people died in a drone attack on a shelter in Al-Fasher, a city under siege and on the verge of collapse in Sudan.

The al-Fasher resistance committee, made up of local citizens and activists, said paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) hit the Dar al-Arqam camp, located inside a university, with two drone strikes and eight artillery shells.

In the statement made by the group, it was said: “Children, women and the elderly were killed in cold blood and many of them were completely burned.”

Eyewitnesses stated that there was panic as rescue teams removed the bodies from under the rubble.

Hospitals, which have already been under siege for months, are overwhelmed; Doctors treat the injured on the floors and in the corridors.

RSF has surrounded al-Fasher for the past 17 months in an attempt to seize control of the Sudanese army’s last stronghold in the Darfur region.

The resistance group said the situation in Al Fasher “goes beyond disaster and genocide.”

Sudan has been plagued by conflict since 2023, with the departure of senior commanders of the RSF and Sudanese army, resulting in a violent power struggle; This is creating one of the worst humanitarian crises.

The RSF has intensified its attack on al-Fasher in recent weeks, leading experts to believe that the city could soon fall unless the army receives immediate reinforcements.

Investigations showed that the RSF had finished building an earthen wall around al-Fasher, thus strengthening the siege and making it more difficult for civilians to escape.

The UN said 250,000 civilians were trapped in al-Fasher and warned that continued attacks on civilian areas could amount to war crimes.

Hunger and disease spread throughout the city as residents struggled with constant bombardment and dwindling food and medical supplies.

At least two days ago 13 people died after RSF bombed one of the last remaining hospitals in al-Fasher.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Friday condemned the continued killing and wounding of civilians.

“I am appalled by RSF’s endless and wanton disregard for civilian life,” he said.
