Sydneysiders are bracing for what could be the hottest October day ever recorded. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting that today will be hot, dry and windy across much of New South Wales, with temperatures in Sydney’s CBD reaching 39°C, surpassing the city’s October temperature record of 38.2°C set at Observatory Hill in 2004.
Meanwhile, there is a severe weather warning for “damaging, locally destructive winds” in Melbourne and elsewhere in Victoria this morning.
In other news, a US company has made a bid for beleaguered regional airline Rex. We’ll have more information about this soon.

NSW health officials urge residents to take precautions ahead of hot weather
A. NSW Health spokesperson People are reminded to take precautions during Wednesday’s high temperatures, given that hot weather has the potential to cause serious illness requiring hospitalization and can even be fatal.
Heat can also worsen people’s underlying health conditions (including heart, kidney, respiratory diseases, diabetes, and mental illnesses) and cause people to seek medical attention at hospital emergency rooms (EDs) and other healthcare services.
Simple prevention strategies include staying inside during the hottest hours of the day, closing doors, windows, blinds, and curtains early to keep out hot air and sun during the day, staying hydrated, and carrying a water bottle when outside.
People who experience heat-related symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and cramps should cool down immediately, get away from the sun and seek shade or air conditioning, take a cool shower or bath if possible, and take sips of water.

Sydney braces for potential record-breaking heat

Bureau of Meteorology Hot, dry and windy weather is expected across much of New South Wales today, following record-breaking temperatures in many states.
If temperatures in Sydney’s CBD reach 39°C as forecast for today, it could fall by 38.2°C, the city’s October temperature record set at Observatory Hill in 2004.
The weather bureau expects temperatures to approach 40C in the western suburbs.
On Tuesday, both Queensland and New South Wales recorded their hottest October temperatures ever.
The Queensland outback town of Birdsville set a new record when it hit 46.1C at 2.28pm local time on Tuesday, making it the hottest October temperature ever recorded in the state, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. The state’s previous October record was 45.1 degrees on Oct. 31, 1995, at the Birdsville police station.
NSW also recorded its hottest October temperature ever, with Bourke Airport reaching 44.8C at 4pm local time on Tuesday. The previous NSW record for the month was 43.9 degrees at Brewarrina on 31 October 1919.

The weather bureau has issued a warning of damaging winds for almost the entire state of Victoria this morning.
The bureau said strong north-west to west winds averaging 50 to 60km/h and damaging winds of up to 100km/h would develop in southwestern Victoria and highland areas on Wednesday morning, then spread eastward across the rest of the warning area, including Melbourne, by the afternoon.
Damaging west to south-west winds averaging 60 to 80 km/h and gusts up to 100 to 120 km/h are expected to develop south-westward later on Wednesday morning and shift east over southern parts of Central, including Geelong and the Mornington Peninsula, in the early afternoon and into southern Gippsland by mid-to-late afternoon.
Destructive winds of up to 130km/h are possible along the coast west of Cape Otway in the late morning and afternoon.
Conditions are expected to ease in the north and west on Wednesday afternoon
The SES advises people to avoid travel if possible and stay away from potential hazards, ensure loose items such as outdoors, umbrellas and trampolines are securely secured, move vehicles under cover or away from trees, and stay indoors.
