Getting rid of Keir Starmer will make things worse for government, Labour MP warns

Replacing Sir Keir Starmer as prime minister will not solve any of the country’s problems, a Labor MP has said.
Patrick Hurley, Labor MP for Southport, made a strong appeal for his party to “stick with Starmer”.
Far from making things better, Sir Keir’s removal could cause the government to “destabilize” and lead to even greater economic difficulties.
Labor was in danger of making the same mistake as the last Conservative administration, which had “done no good for the country” by changing prime ministers after another.
In an interview with the BBC, the MP said: “The fundamentals will not change no matter who the Prime Minister is.

“Two major wars are ongoing globally, affecting defense spending, public services, energy security and climate change.
“We have had levels of economic growth that have not been high enough for over 15 years. None of this will change if we change the person at the top of the tree. None of this will change just with a new leader and prime minister coming in.”
“In fact, the situation is likely to get worse, because destabilizing your own government tends to push bond yields even higher. No prime minister will change that. We must stick with Keir Starmer.”
He also issued a warning to Labor MPs who plan to replace him.
“This leader who goes around touting names, people should be careful what they want.
“The internal problems this country is experiencing now are more challenging than they have been in the last 100 years, and if there is a change at the top, things could get worse.”
He continued: “(Financial) markets will look at the stability of the government… our ability to repay the loans we have already taken out, the excessive amount of debt we borrowed under the previous government due to Covid and other problems.
“If we start making changes now, the rates these markets demand from us will be even higher. We will have even less room to maneuver to improve our public services.”
“The only challenge we face as a government is to get our economic performance up to a reasonable standard so that we can better fund our public services and do all the good things we want to do for Labour.
“And we can’t do that if we continue with the instability we’ve seen with Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak and a host of Tory prime ministers who have come and gone and done no good for the country.
“The last thing we need to do is take a leaf out of their book.”
