Planned Trump-Putin Summit In Hungary Postponed, No New Date Set | World News

According to US and Russian officials, the planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary has been postponed and a new date has not been announced. Preparations for the possible summit to be held in Budapest were suspended after the telephone conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier this week.

Authorities described the call as “constructive but inconclusive” and stated that more work was needed to hold the meeting.

Trump expressed his desire to meet Putin after his phone call with the Russian leader last week, in order to make progress in efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. But the US president told reporters in Washington on Tuesday that he did not want to have a “wasted meeting”, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the timing of any possible summit has not yet been determined and emphasized that “serious preparations” are needed before the leaders meet. Despite the delay, Russia’s special envoy for investment and economic cooperation Kirill Dmitriev said on his X account late Tuesday that preparations were continuing and the summit had not been cancelled.

The postponement came after Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Friday. During that meeting, Trump ruled out a trilateral summit involving Russia, citing deep tensions between Moscow and Kiev.

Trump and Putin previously met in Alaska in August, but no agreement was reached and ceasefire negotiations were stalled. On October 16, Trump announced that he would restart efforts to end the “dishonorable” Russia-Ukraine war and confirmed plans to meet with Putin.

Following his recent phone call with Putin, Trump wrote on Truth Social that “great progress was made in today’s phone call.” He also stated that he would discuss the details of his meeting with Zelensky. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the phone call between Trump and Putin took place and acknowledged ongoing communications between the two leaders.

Although the timing of the summit is currently uncertain, both U.S. and Russian officials have indicated that talks are ongoing and future coordination regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains a priority.
