Wales 24-23 Japan: Head coach Steve Tandy couldn’t watch Jarrod Evans’ match-winning penalty

Evans was the hero of Cardiff’s demise defeat of Leinster at the Arms Park in 2022 and achieved the same success he achieved in Connacht in 2017, also beating the wind from Galway.

The 29-year-old from Pontypridd now has a Test moment to add to his highlights.

“I’ve been through this for my club, but this is the first time I’ve experienced this for my country,” Evans said.

“I’m pretty relieved it’s over, but that’s why you devoted so many hours and hard work.”

It was only in the 79th minute that substitute fly half was summoned, with Wales stuck in their own half and needing something special.

“The more time goes on, the more you think you can’t progress, but you have to be ready to impact the game,” said Evans, who replaced Dan Edwards.

“I’m just the lucky guy who finally got that moment, but I was even more proud of how we progressed on the field.

“We kept the ball and didn’t cough it up, which we probably did for most of the game to give Japan a lead.”

A penalty just out of range meant Evans kicked into the 22 and the group almost guaranteed his right foot would not be needed.

“The forwards were incredible with the maul and rolled us all the way – we were unlucky not to get away with the try.

“We thought about doing a quick touch, but then I took the decision out of the kids’ hands.”

Wales prepare for New Zealand next Saturday knowing their performance levels need to improve dramatically.

“We’re going to be tough on ourselves,” Tandy said. “When I watch this group there is never a lack of effort and you can build on that.

“It’s obviously pleasing to get these tight wins, but we have to keep growing.”
