Channel 2’s Cory James Tonight at 11pm for WSB, we talked to Alpharetta neighbors about the current state of North Point Mall

“I remember being built where this happened,” Matthew Khodayari told James.

An area that Behnaz Khodayari says she no longer recognizes.

“And it’s been very sad over the last few years,” he said. “It looks so empty.”

Alpharetta City Council Members are trying to bring back that old energy. They approved a financial plan to help transform the area without costing taxpayers a penny.

The multi-million dollar project will be funded through a tax allocation district, also known as TAD, for about 30 years, said a consultant representing the firm working for the city.

Property taxes generated by new development in this area will be used to pay for the project.

At this time, it’s unclear exactly what will be part of the mega renovation and expansion. But officials say the area could support 2,600 residences as well as 3 million square feet of commercial space for hotels, retail stores or offices.

“Whether we bring a sports team here or not, this will certainly attract a potential sports team,” Council member Douglas J. Derito said.

Matthew Khodayari hopes professional hockey will come to the area.

“It’s pretty exciting to do that. I think what the Braves did for that part of town could potentially happen for us,” he said.

No one at the meeting made public comments to express their views on this proposal. This is just the framework for the project, but officials say redeveloping the area could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

The tax allocation zone officially begins on December 31st.
