Liverpool: The city hailed as the most generous in Britain for second year running

Liverpool has been named the most generous city in England for the second year in a row, according to figures from fundraising platform GoFundMe.

The Merseyside city topped the list, which ranked places by donor numbers relative to population and demonstrated a consistent spirit of philanthropy.

A local appeal has been launched for toddler Sienna-Rose Millen, whose family needs more than £100,000 for a special medical flight after she collapsed on holiday in Mexico.

Elsewhere on Merseyside, more than £370,000 has been raised for a new playground at Churchtown Primary School.

This touching effort honored students Alice da Silva Aguiar and six-year-old Bebe King and seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, who were tragically killed in a stabbing attack in Southport last July.

The fundraiser was the fourth-largest campaign in 2025 on the crowdfunding platform.

GoFundMe chief executive Tim Cadogan said: “This year we’ve seen people across the UK helping each other in extraordinary ways, and it’s a testament to the generosity of its community that Liverpool has once again come out on top.”

In the most generous city rankings published on Thursday, Glasgow ranked second, London third, Cardiff and Bristol fourth and fifth.

Norwich was sixth and Manchester seventh, while Belfast was eighth and Edinburgh was ninth.

Wrexham in north Wales has made it into GoFundMe’s top 10 most generous cities for the first time, following a campaign by mum Jasmin Roberts, who needs to raise £1.5 million for her one-year-old son Ollie to have heart surgery in the US.

Ollie will undergo surgery at Stanford Children’s Hospital in California in January after his fundraising goal is met.

The campaign became this year’s biggest fundraiser globally by the number of donations and was supported by Hollywood actor and Wrexham AFC co-chairman Ryan Reynolds, who donated £10,000.
