Powerball’s jackpot is $1.6 billion—see the after-tax payout by state

Powerball jackpot after 45 draws with no jackpot winner increased to 1.6 billion dollars ahead of the draw on Monday night at 10:59 PM ET.

The jackpot ranks as the fourth-largest in Powerball history and the fifth-largest among U.S. lottery jackpots, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association, which manages the lottery.

To win the jackpot, the ticket holder must match all six numbers on their ticket. The winner will then choose between an annual prize estimated at $1.6 billion or a lump sum payment estimated at $735.3 million. The annual payment option includes one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.

Both options are before taxes. Winnings are automatically subject to federal withholding at a rate of 24%, but winners can expect to be in the top 37% marginal tax bracket when they file their 2025 returns.

State taxes could further reduce earnings. Eight states (California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming) do not tax lottery winnings at all, while most other states charge state taxes of roughly 4% to 6%.

Below is a state-by-state breakdown of how much winners can take home under both payment options, listed alphabetically by each state and territory. According to usamega.com.
