Stephanie Alexander’s book for many Australian families Cook’s Friend is the ultimate kitchen bible. But she recently discovered that one of her favorite recipes had been accidentally omitted from the final edition.

Far from being a lunchbox staple, these biscuits are the cornerstone of Stephanie’s Kitchen Garden Program. For pupils in 1,000 schools, cooking this eggless, golden treat to commemorate Anzac Day is offering hands-on “enjoyable food education”.

It is a course that seamlessly brings together math, STEM, language and history; It’s a delicious way to connect with the durable biscuits once sent to soldiers in war.

You will need a metric measuring scale, spoons and cups, a large pot, two mixing bowls (1 large, 1 small), a mixing spoon, and two baking sheets.

This is an edited version of the recipe shared with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 to teach children how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh food.
