Palakkad Girl To Get Prosthetic Hand After Tragic Amputation

Thiruvananthapuram : Nine-year-old Vinodini, whose right hand was amputated due to alleged medical negligence, will soon be fitted with a forearm prosthesis and will regain his smile.
His family from Palakkad had called for help many times. Now Kerala Opposition Leader VD Satheeshan has stepped in and offered financial support to get him fitted with a prosthetic hand as soon as possible. “When I saw her story on television, I was touched by her plight. She is such a bubbly and lively little girl. I called her father and promised to arrange a prosthetic hand for her. We will bear the entire cost of the fitting and I have instructed the concerned people to start the process today,” Satheeshan told the media.
The boy’s parents, R. Vinod and Praseetha, are daily wage laborers who have been struggling to find a prosthetic arm for the last few months. The family has received a total of 2 lakh rupees so far. They had also brought the issue to the attention of the district administration. Taking Satheeshan’s help, the parents are now relieved and the girl, who was once uncomfortable facing others at school, is now happy.
Medical negligence claim
The tragic incident occurred on September 24 when Vinodini fell while playing at his home in Ozhivupara in Pallassana. The woman was first taken to Chittur Government Taluk Hospital for treatment, and then she was referred to the Government Regional Hospital in Palakkad, where an x-ray was taken and a plaster cast was applied to her hand. A few days later, he began to experience severe pain and discomfort. When he was taken back to Palakkad hospital, doctors assured him that the condition was normal by giving him painkillers, but his condition did not improve.
After a few days, the boy’s condition worsened; Severe pain, discoloration, numbness and blisters were observed in his hand. Vinodini was admitted to Government Medical College, Kozhikode for further treatment. Unfortunately, the child developed compartment syndrome, a serious complication caused by overly tight and improper bandaging. When the situation became critical, the hand had to be amputated and two doctors were suspended for medical negligence.
