“Positive Pressure in Chasing Back-to-Back World Cup Title at Home”: Suryakumar Yadav

After defeating New Zealand 4-1 in the T20I series, India now has its sights set on repeating history and beating the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup India vs Sri Lanka 2026. Speaking on JioHotstar’s ‘Amul Cricket Live’, India’s T20I Captain Suryakumar Yadav reflected on the positive pressure of defending the title, revamped batting approach and fearless team mentality.
“Home games always bring pressure, but without it there is no excitement in the sport. Chasing a historic consecutive World Cup win on home soil, never before achieved by a team, feels like a rewarding responsibility and positive pressure. I am thrilled with the tremendous fan support at the venues and the team shares that enthusiasm.”
About the revamped batting approach:
“After the South Africa series break, I returned home, packed my jersey bag and rested for 9-10 days. As the new year started, I restarted training considering the shortcomings of the previous year, especially my strike rate in the first overs. In 2021-23, I attacked with a strike rate of 200-250 from the first 5-10 balls; now I settled on the first 5-7 balls. Then I doubled my strike rate. This approach started working from the first match in Nagpur. “It worked and it gave me momentum that revived my fitness.”
On India’s T20 World Cup plan:
“In high-stakes T20s with explosive top-order batting, we need extra specialist batsman at No 7 or 8. Our core bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel can give a big advantage by bowling a full 16 overs. Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube (2-2 overs each) and occasionally Abhishek Sharma offer flexibility, providing a seven-innings plus. An all-round setup with an eighth batsman that is ideal for the World Cup squad.”
On the fearless approach of Indian batsmen:
“Each player brings their own unique identity; Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, all batting from the state and franchise levels, staying true to their own style. I encouraged them to stick to it: hit a six off the first ball if appropriate, make fielding decisions based on pitch conditions. Their fearless approach made my captaincy easier.”
On the dilemma of choosing the opening location:
“Tilak Varma’s situation remains unclear. I must know that he is batting well and looking sharp. His return will create a selection dilemma as all 15 team members are playing as a competing XI. The final call between Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson for the opening role will be announced on February 7.”
