Mandelson quits Labour as Epstein documents reveal he urged bank to ‘threaten’ Labour chancellor over banker tax – UK politics live | Politics

Tories and SNP call for investigation into how Mandelson was appointed ambassador given Epstein links

Opposition parties are calling for an investigation into how Epstein was appointed ambassador to Washington in light of the new revelations and Peter Mandelson’s resignation from the Labor Party.

A. Conservative party spokesman in question:

Lord Mandelson was completely disgraced. But Keir Starmer lacked the backbone to act and allowed Mandelson to resign from the Labor Party rather than fire him.

Keir Starmer and his private secretary [Morgan McSweeney] He appointed Mandelson as ambassador despite his relationship with Epstein and then refused to act even as the mountain of evidence against him grew.

Given the Prime Minister’s appalling lack of judgment and involvement in the Downing Street operation, a full and detailed independent investigation must now be launched.

StephenFlynnThe SNP leader at Westminster has written an open letter to the Prime Minister’s ethics adviser, Sir Laurie Magnus, demanding an investigation. In his letter, Flynn says:

Current prime minister Keir Starmer appointed Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States; Before that he was appointed to the House of Lords and the cabinet by the previous Labor prime minister, Gordon Brown, and before that he was a member of several British cabinets under Tony Blair.

Given the serious allegations currently emerging about the extent of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s relationship, political influence and financial influence over Lord Mandelson, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive and rapid investigation into Peter Mandelson’s conduct in public life and, more importantly – especially in your own remit – how and why he was appointed to high office by Labor prime ministers.

Last month the SNP called on Mandelson be deprived of rank Through Epstein connections. It takes an act of parliament to lose one’s nobility, and that hasn’t happened since the First World War. legislation passed Removing the nobility of a handful of Germans and Austrians who had nobility as a result of their English heritage.

Mandelson quits Labor after Epstein documents reveal he urged bank to ‘threaten’ Labor chancellor over bankers’ tax

Good morning. Peter Mandelson’s career in politics appears to be over. To be fair, journalists have written about this at least four times before. But this time it may actually turn out to be real.

It was my former Guardian colleague David Hencke who wrote the first story about the career-ending Mandelson scandal in 1998. It involved an undisclosed loan from a millionaire, and Mandelson resigned as trade secretary. Three years later, Mandelson returned to the cabinet as Northern Ireland secretary and was forced to resign again over another story involving a favor and a wealthy person (this time a billionaire; Mandelson’s appetite for scandal is growing). After a stint as European commissioner, he returned to the cabinet and it was assumed that Labour’s defeat in the 2010 general election would end his political career. Ed Miliband, the new leader of the Labor Party, explains why: “We all believe that retirement is dignified.” He wouldn’t give Mandelson a job.

But Keir Starmer gave Mandelson a job; It’s a dream job, US ambassador. In September, Mandelson was ousted over his past connections to the late convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. And last night, Mandelson resigned from the Labor Party as new revelations emerged about his dealings with Epstein.

Here is our story in one night Alexandra Hill And Pippa Crerar.

According to Mandelson, dignity in retirement has clearly not been achieved; The story is told with a picture from the Epstein files showing his peer in his underwear.

Mandelson said in his statement last night that he left the party because of the embarrassment caused by the documents in the files claiming that Epstein paid him $ 75,000. Mandelson believes this claim is false and the documents are not accurate.

But he did not dispute another revelation in the Epstein files that showed him in 2009 advising Epstein, investment bank JPMorgan, on how his cabinet colleague Alistair Darling (then chancellor) should lobby against a proposed tax on bankers’ bonuses.

Like Jim Pickard reports in his story On behalf of the Financial Times, Epstein emailed Mandelson to ask whether the new tax would only apply to the cash portion of bonuses. Pickard’s statement is as follows:

Mandelson responded within minutes: “I’m trying to fix it as I explained to Jes last night. Treasury is getting involved but I’m ready.” Epstein responded with “please let me know first,” an apparent reference to Jes Staley, then a senior banker at JPMorgan.

Two days later on December 17, Epstein emailed Mandelson to ask if JPMorgan’s CEO Jamie Dimon “should call my girlfriend one more time.”

Mandelson replied: “Yes, and slightly threatening.”

mandelson He told the Financial Times:

Every UK and international bank was having the same discussion about the impact this would have on financial services in the UK. My discussions in the government at that time reflected the views of the entire sector, not a single person.

Here is the agenda of the day.
