India-US trade deal: US President Donald Trump announced the signing of a trade agreement with India on Monday, and Washington reduced tariffs on India to 18 percent. This comes after months of tariff-related tensions after Washington imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods in August 2025; half of which was linked to India’s purchases of crude oil from Russia. The agreement gave rise to rumors about US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and his role in relations between Washington and New Delhi.

Trump said in his Truth Social post: “It was my honor to speak with India’s Prime Minister Modi this morning. He is one of my greatest friends and a Strong and Respected Leader of his Country. We talked about many things, including trade, Russia, and ending the war with Ukraine. He agreed to stop buying Russian oil and buy much more from the US and potentially Venezuela. This will help END THE WAR currently going on in Ukraine, where thousands of people have died each week!”

Elaborating on the agreement, Trump added: “Out of friendship and respect for Prime Minister Modi and at his request, we have agreed to a Trade Agreement between the United States and India, effective immediately, under which the United States will reduce the Mutual Tariff from 25% to 18%. Likewise, they will move forward to reduce Tariffs and Non-Tariff Barriers against the United States to ZERO. The Prime Minister also pledged to ‘BUY AMERICAN’ found, at a much higher level, in addition to over $500 BILLION in US Energy, Technology, Agriculture, Coal and many other products.”

“Our great relationship with India will be even stronger going forward. Prime Minister Modi and I are two people who GET THEIR JOB DONE, something that cannot be said for most,” he added.
