American figure skating couple Madison Chock and Evan Bates won the silver medal at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games, scoring 134.67 points in the free dance on Wednesday night, for a total of 224.39 points.

Married couple Chock and Bates, who have been skating together for more than a decade, won the gold medal in the free dance with 135.64 points, with the French duo of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron scoring a total of 225.82 points.

This was the best matchup ever and should have outlasted the group of Chock and Bates, who earned the USA its 12th medal of the Games so far.

The emotional Canadian couple Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, who finished third in the bronze medal, rose to the podium position with a final score of 217.74 after the free dance result of 131.56.

The second U.S. group, consisting of Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik, made their Olympic debut and finished fifth with a total of 206.72 points.

Chock and Bates were 0.46 points behind the French pair going into the free dance on Wednesday night, seeking their first ice dancing Olympic medal with the hope of gold.

The dancing matador routine to The Rolling Stones’ famous “Paint It, Black” resulted in huge cheers from the crowd as he finished with tears in his eyes.

Chock and Bates earned double gold medals following Sunday’s Team USA victory, but they had to watch one more routine to see if they could take gold when Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron took the ice.

After a similarly excellent routine, the judges decided that the French duo had done enough to beat the Americans in the end.

Cizeron won the ice dancing title at the 2022 Beijing Games with her former partner Gabriella Papadakis and has also won five world titles with her.

Their separation was fraught with controversy, as Papadakis, in his memoirs, accused Cizeron of an “unbalanced” relationship and felt that Cizeron was “under his control.” She also claimed he was “controlling” and “demanding”.

Cizeron described this as a “smear campaign” and “misinformation” and said he would take legal action against his partner, with whom he has been skating since childhood.

Fournier Beaudry, meanwhile, dealt with her own controversy last year as she was previously in a personal and professional relationship with Canadian figure skater Nikolaj Sorensen. Sorensen was suspended for six years following a sexual assault allegation in 2012; however, this claim involved an American skating coach rather than Fournier Beaudry.

Fournier Beaudry was granted French citizenship last year to form a partnership with Cizeron. They went on to win four of the five major championship events together, but it was Chock and Bates who placed second at the International Skating Union Grand Prix Final.

However, after an exciting performance by all pairs at the Milan Cortina Games, the Olympic gold in this event remained in France’s hands.
