“While President Donald Trump’s deportation agenda separates families and federal agents detain children as young as 5 and kill unarmed civilians, American athletes are now winning medals for the nation at the Olympics,” the article said. “This fracture between the pride of rivals in the United States and the national shame of the federal government is all too common.”
HuffPost highlighted Olympians disparaging the current government in response to recent events such as the killing of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. For example, Olympic skier Hunter Hess said: “There’s a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of. Wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the United States.”
