Harry Maguire: Man Utd defender given 15-month suspended sentence over Greece incident

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was given a 15-month suspended prison sentence by a Greek court following the incident on the island of Mykonos in August 2020.

England international Maguire was given a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days in prison in 2020 after he was initially found guilty of repeated infliction of bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public servants and insults.

The following day, Maguire’s legal team appealed the decision. Under Greek law, the appeal invalidated his conviction and meant a full retrial.

The retrial was postponed four times between 2023 and 2025 before restarting in Syros on Wednesday.

The court concluded that Maguire was guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery.

In keeping with the defence’s reduced gravity of his crimes, Maguire’s sentence was reduced to 15 months.

Sources told BBC Sport that Maguire denies wrongdoing and plans to appeal to the High Court.

Determined to clear his name legally, Maguire turned down multiple opportunities to settle the case out of court.

The 32-year-old is included in the Manchester United squad for Wednesday’s Premier League match at Newcastle United (20:15 GMT), despite having to leave the team due to illness during Sunday’s win against Crystal Palace.
