53 House Dems oppose resolution calling Iran ‘largest state sponsor of terrorism’

Dozens of Democrats voted against a non-binding resolution in the House confirming that Iran is the “largest state sponsor of terrorism.”

The resolution, put forward by Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., passed Thursday by a vote of 372-53, with all those voting no being Democrats. Two Democrats also voted present.

Among those voting against the measure were Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass. and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., were all members of the “Squad.”

The resolution stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran “remains the world’s largest sponsor of terrorism and provides significant financial and military support to groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis.”

The Pentagon’s report stated that “Iran-backed proxy militias are responsible for the deaths of at least 603 US soldiers in Iraq” and that Iran “poses a direct and permanent threat to the US and is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American citizens.”

Additionally, “Iran has accumulated large stockpiles of enriched uranium and continues to block access to undeclared sites in Iran in connection with its ‘large, ambitious nuclear weapons program,’ according to Rafeal Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.”

The resolution concludes with the statement, “The House of Representatives declares that it is the policy of the United States that Iran remains the major state sponsor of terrorism.”

Rep. Julie Fedorchak, RD, voted in favor of the resolution. he said expression “This week’s classified bipartisan briefing with Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth, John Ratcliffe and General Dan Caine underscored the significance of the threat we face from an Iran intent on developing nuclear weapons behind a veil of formidable ballistic weapons.”

“Standing with our allies and countering state-sponsored terrorism is essential to protecting Americans and advancing stability around the world,” he added. “This decision sends a strong message that we will not ignore or excuse the regime’s extreme actions.”

Democratic Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, who also voted in favor of the resolution, said: “I agree with this resolution’s basic claim that Iran is a bad actor.

“Iran’s malicious and destabilizing actions in the region and its treatment of its own citizens must be condemned. I have never objected to this. My objection is that going to war is a reasonable response to this allegation.” he continued. “I support this decision. I do not support the president’s preferred war with Iran.”
