Cyber Complaints Dip In City, Says Sajjanar

Hyderabad: Hyderabad city police commissioner VC Sajjanar said on Friday that daily cybercrime complaints in the city have dropped from around 80 to around 60, and the decline has been attributed to increased public awareness about online scams. Speaking at the ‘Cyber Simba’ volunteer orientation programme, Sajjanar urged citizens to actively spread awareness about cyber security to prevent citizens from falling into the trap of fraudsters.
He said that the ‘Cyber Simba’ initiative launched under the Jagrut Hyderabad – Surakshit Hyderabad campaign promotes community participation in the fight against cybercrime. “Use WhatsApp groups not just to exchange greetings but also to spread messages that promote cybersecurity,” he advised.
Highlighting the progress, Sajjanar noted that since November, 1,717 volunteers have registered and conducted 5,118 door-to-door campaigns, reaching nearly two lakh people.
He warned that cybercriminals were using sophisticated methods such as digital detention, fake trading platforms and investment fraud to dupe victims, including retired judges and professionals. She also advised women and young people to be careful when interacting with strangers on social media.
Explaining the importance of the “Golden Hour” – the first hour after a cybercrime occurs – he said reporting incidents immediately to the 1930 hotline increases the chances of recovering lost money.
Sajjanar also talked about the ‘C‑Mitra’ service, which allows victims to file their FIRs online, and said that its aim is to expand the movement towards making Hyderabad a “cybercrime-free city”.
