US-127 to close Monday for rebuilding project that will last until November

US-127 will close Monday for reconstruction project that will last through November
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The Michigan Department of Transportation is preparing to launch a major reconstruction project on US-127 in Lansing next week; it’s a months-long effort that will narrow lanes, close ramps and likely slow traffic on one of central Michigan’s busiest corridors throughout the fall.
MDOT said work will begin on Monday, March 16, on US-127 between Lake Lansing Road and I-69 in Ingham and Clinton counties, and the highway will be reconstructed from just south of Lake Lansing Road to the I-69 interchange to the north. The agency says the project is designed to improve the highway’s geometry, safety and overall traffic flow.

According to MDOT, the work will include sidewalk repairs using concrete crushing with new asphalt pavement, as well as bridge improvements, improved drainage, new signs, smart transportation systems and new pavement markings.
The US-127 line planned for construction will run through or near Lansing, East Lansing and DeWitt, serving commuters, freight traffic and regional travelers. MDOT describes this stretch of highway as an important local and national commerce corridor and says the improvements are intended to improve the safety and mobility of drivers who use this roadway every day.
MDOT warned that single-lane and on-ramp closures will be implemented throughout the project and drivers should plan for delays. Lanes will be closed at various points to provide work space for crews and protect both workers and drivers, which the ministry calls a necessary step for such reconstruction.
The project is expected to last until mid-November 2026. MDOT says the total investment, based on economic modeling, is projected to directly and indirectly support approximately 2,481 jobs over the life of the business.
