At the 2009 Oscars, held in February of the same year, Ledger posthumously won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
This honor was given for his critically acclaimed performance as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, which was also released after the late star’s death.
The award was received by his father, mother and sister, who made moving speeches.
His father thanked both Warner Bros. and Nolan for ‘giving Heath the creative license to develop and explore this crazy Joker character.’
He added: ‘This award tonight would be a humbling confirmation of Heath’s quiet determination to be truly accepted by all of you, his peers, in an industry he loves so much.’
His mother also said: ‘We are truly touched by the honor and respect shown to him with this award.’
