A South Florida city leader was found dead in her home Wednesday and her husband was in police custody, authorities said.

Coral Springs Deputy Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was located by police officers around 10 a.m. Wednesday morning after they launched an investigation into her “medical condition,” the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

Police Chief Brad Mock did not provide any details about Bowen’s death and said the incident was being investigated as a “domestic violence incident.” Mock said Bowen’s husband, Stephen Bowen, was in police custody.

The chief said there are no other suspects wanted.

Bowen was first elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2020 and won re-election in 2024. Bowen was appointed by the commission last November to serve a second, one-year term as deputy mayor, according to his biography on the city’s website.

Before being elected to the commission, Bowen previously worked as an environmental scientist with the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

Bowen’s family confirmed his death on social media.

“Throughout his years in public office, he led with integrity, compassion and an unwavering sense of purpose,” the family’s statement said.

“He believed in bringing people together, listening to those he served, and working tirelessly to create positive change in his community. To us, he was a source of strength, wisdom, and love; someone who always put others before himself.”

“While many knew her as a leader and advocate, we knew her as a daughter, a sister, and a friend whose warmth and laughter filled every room. Her legacy will live on not only in the policies she helped shape, but also in the countless lives she touched.”

The Coral Springs government Facebook page paid tribute to Bowen, saying his “leadership was based on compassion, strength, and unwavering commitment to others.”

“His impact on Coral Springs is immeasurable, and his loss leaves a void in our hearts. We ask our community to keep his family, loved ones, and everyone who mourns in your thoughts and prayers. We stand together as one city during this difficult time. Even in this darkness, we will carry his light.”

U.S. Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost, D-Fla., said he was saddened to hear of Bowen’s death and remembers her as “a tireless advocate, a dedicated progressive leader and a strong voice for her community.”

Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Nikki Fried said she spoke with Bowen a few days ago.

“I hugged him at our party’s leadership summit and never imagined it would be one of our last moments together,” Fried said in a statement.

“Nancy was my friend and the friend of all who believed democracy was worth fighting for. The world is less bright without her.”
