Record 85.96 pc voter turnout in Assam assembly polls

This marks the highest voter turnout in the state’s history, surpassing the previous high of 84.72 per cent recorded in 2016, when the BJP first came to power. When voting was conducted under COVID-19 protocols in 2021, turnout dropped to 82.04 percent.
After voting ended on Thursday, the EC estimated the turnout at 85.64, which was revised to 85.91 on Friday.
The EC is updating turnout figures as data comes in from all polling stations, an official said.
Female voters outnumbered men; While the participation rate was 86.54 percent, this rate was 85.37 percent among male voters. Approximately 35.85 percent of third-gender voters also exercised their right to vote.

Turnout among both male and female voters saw an increase from 2021 levels, at 82.05 percent and 82.04 percent respectively. Among the constituencies, Birsing-Jarua, Jaleswar and Srijangram in Dhubri district recorded the highest turnout of 96.54 per cent, 96.28 per cent and 96.07 per cent respectively.
The lowest turnout was recorded in New Guwahati at 72.37 per cent, followed by Dispur at 75.04 per cent and Guwahati Central at 76.07 per cent, all in Kamrup (Metro) district.
Turnout exceeded 90 percent in some 24 constituencies, mostly in minority-dominated areas; That’s more than three times the seven seats in 2021. More than 95 percent voting was achieved in seven constituencies.
All 11 assembly segments in Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency recorded over 90 per cent turnout.
Turnout in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s constituency stood at 82.04 per cent, slightly below 82.34 per cent in 2021.
On the other hand, in Jorhat, where state Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi is contesting, the vote share increased to 78.64 percent from 74.67 percent in the previous polls.

Most other constituencies across the state also saw an increase in voter turnout; officials attributed this to the implementation of Special Revision and intensified voter awareness programs.
In these elections, the fate of 722 candidates from 126 electoral districts was determined. The counting of votes will be done on May 4.
While the BJP aims to remain in power for the third consecutive term in the state, the Congress is trying to take back the state it lost in 2016.
