Scottish Greens vow to examine Donald Trump’s wealth after ‘personal playground’ claim

The Scottish Greens have vowed to launch an investigation into the funding of Donald Trump’s golf courses in Scotland if they win next week’s election.

The party, which has long been critical of the US president, has previously defended ordering an undisclosed fortune to examine how he acquired facilities in South Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire.

Patrick Harvie, the party’s foreign affairs spokesman and former co-chairman, said the billionaire “should never be allowed to treat Scotland as his personal playground”.

He said: “He is a convicted fraudster, racist and war criminal whose politics has brought fear, violence and instability to the world.

“The evidence shows he is ripping off Scotland.

“But the Scottish and UK governments have pandered to him because he is rich, powerful and owns several golf courses. This needs to end.

“No one should be above the law, especially people like Donald Trump.

“The Scottish Government must use whatever power it has to get to the bottom of this matter, including a pattern of unexplained wealth.

“This will force Trump to reveal where the money he used to buy assets in Scotland came from, but the Scottish Government has continued to ignore these calls, shielding Trump from any scrutiny.

“That’s why the Scottish Greens will reopen the case and use an undisclosed wealth warrant to force the transparency that Trump has avoided for too long.”

Trump’s comments came after Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party in England and Wales, told a press conference in Glasgow that Trump’s golf courses should be taken away from him using international sanctions, describing Trump as “unhinged”.

Trump International Scotland has been contacted for comment.
